Acer Aspire One Netbooks
Netbooks are a fantastic way of enjoying the internet on the move. Here at the Camera Centre we try to stock a range of good qualify, used and affordable Acer Aspire One models. All have been thoroughly checked and are guaranteed for 3 months*. Aspire Ones come in four main variants:
- Linux with an SSD hard drive
- Linux with a standard hard drive
- Windows with an SSD hard drive
- Windows with a standard hard drive
They also come in a range of colours – blue, white, black, pink and red. Our range changes most weeks but we can obtain any desired specification in any colour if required.
Jargon Buster
Linux Lite – an operating system with an almost identical appearance to Windows XP. Ideal for general web surfing, word processing, e-mailing, Facebook, photo storage etc. Linux Lite comes with Open Office, which anyone familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) will find intuitive and easy. Linux works very well with the SSD hard drives (see below) and does not require any special knowledge to enjoy. You will not require any specific security software either.
SSD hard drive – this is a hard drive that is very similar to an SD memory card and has no moving parts. The advantage of an SSD is its low power consumption, resistance to shock and 20g weight. Aspire Ones come in 8GB and 16GB variations. High Capacity SD cards can be slotted into the side of the netbook to boost available storage space.
Standard hard drive – these are ‘normal’ laptop hard drives that use spinning discs and magnets in an enclosed case. Their advantage over SSD drives is they are faster and can hold much more data (120GB, 160GB, 250GB). Their disadvantage is slightly higher power consumption, are heavier and more fragile.
Wi-fi / Wireless – this lets you connect to your home or office router (broadband box) using wireless signal. Wireless is also offered in many cafes, at airports and shopping centres. All Aspire One models have wireless.
3G – this lets you connect to the internet anywhere there is 3G phone signal, similar to a smart phone. 3G is not related to wi-fi. You will require a dongle and simcard from one of the 3G providers like Vodafone, Three, T-Mobile etc. Some Aspire One models have built in 3G, in which case you can slot your simcard into the connector behind the battery.
